CE332 Test 3 - 01

Introduction to Asphalt

TermDefinition
What is Asphalt Binder? By-products of petroleum production
4 Main used of asphalt binder -Paving -Roofing -Pipe coating -Waterproofing
Asphalt binder composition and % by MASS Asphalt binder + Aggregate + Air voids (+ Additives) -Aggregate (95%)
Asphalt binder composition and % by Volume -Aggregate (85%) -Binder (10%) -Air Voids (5%)
How is asphalt produced and at what temperature? - Distillation, "boiling off" lighter fractions of crude oil - 800 F or higher
Asphalt Vs Tar -> Asphalt (5) - Viscoelastic! - By-product of Petroleum - Good Paving material - Less Temp dependent - Does not produce as many harmful vapors
Asphalt Vs Tar -> Tar (5) - Viscoelastic! - By-product of Coal - Poor Paving material - More Temp dependent - Produce harmful vapors
Asphalt chemical composition (3) - Mostly carbon and Hydrogen - Heteroatoms: Adds polarity to the molecules - Heteroatoms greatly change the behaviors of asphalt
4 Functional Groups of Asphalt With increasing polarity: more solid behaviors and higher modulus -Saturates -Aromatics -Resin -Asphaltenes
Asphalt behavior is dependent on (3): - Temperature - Time of loading - Age Asphalt is viscoelastic!
Asphalt behavior: Viscous Acts like a fluid when: - High temperature - Sustained loads
Asphalt behavior: Elastic Acts like a solid when: - Low temperature - Rapid loads
Asphalt behavior: Aging - Short term: Volatilization, lost of low density components during mixing and construction - Long term: Oxidation, occurs during mixing, construction and throughout service life Both result in a more elastic/solid behaviors (More Brittle!)
Liquifying Asphalt binder: Heat - Most common - Mix of asphalt binder and Aggregate to produce 'asphalt concrete'
Liquifying Asphalt binder: Emulsify - Combination of Water+Asphalt+Emulsifying agents (soaps) - Ambient Temperature - Used on low traffic - Once placed, water and asphalt break. - Water is evaporates and absorbed, leaving the binder to glue the aggregate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
