Common Tests and Procedures

TermDefinition
Antinuclear Antibody Test a blood test to detect autoimmune diseases
CA 125 a blood sample or fluid from the chest or abdomen is examined for CA 125, a protein that is a tumor marker
CAT scan a procedure that produces images of structures from within the body, uses multiple X-ray images and turns them into a picture
Chemotherapy this treatment destroys cancer cells
Colonoscopy procedure using a viewing tube that enables an examiner to evaluate the appearance of the inside of the colon
Complete blood count a calculation of the elements of blood
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgically creates new routes around narrowed and blocked arteries
Cortisone injection used to treat localized inflammation or widespread inflammation
Creatinine blood test this blood test can detect abnormally high levels of creatinine, which indicates kidney malfunction or failure
Electrolytes balance is needed for normal function of our cells and body, examples of electrolytes that are measured are sodium and chloride
Hemoglobin the protein that carries oxygen, high levels may be caused by lung disease, low levels may indicate anemia
Hysterectomy the uterus is removed during this surgical procedure
Lap band surgery (Gastric banding) surgical weight loss procedure, an adjustable belt is placed around the upper stomach
Liver blood tests blood tests used to detect and monitor liver damage that measures certain liver enzymes
MRI scan a radiology technique using magnetism, radio waves and a computer to produce images of body structures
Pap smear cells from a women's cervix are collected and examined for cancer
Thyroid blood tests used to determine the adequacy of the levels of thyroid hormones
Total hip replacement the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is replaced with artificial material
Total knee replacement the diseased knee joint is replaced with artificial material
Tuberculosis skin test (PPD skin test) determines if someone has developed an immune response to the bacteria that causes TB
Ultrasound a radiology technique using high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the organs and structures of the body
