Burning Hydrocarbons (Section 6)

QuestionAnswer
Complete the equation for the complete combustion of a hydrocarbon: Hydrocarbon + _________ -----> __________ + ____________ oxygen, carbon dioxide, water
Burning hydrocarbons is what kind of reaction? Exothermic
What is the reaction called when you burn hydrocarbons in oxygen? Complete combustion
What is the reaction called if it takes place with insufficient oxygen? Incomplete combustion
How is sulfur dioxide made when burning hydrocarbons? Sulfur is an impurity in fossil fuels that is oxidised when they are combusted
How are nitrogen oxides formed? When the temperature is high enough for nitrogen and oxygen in the air to react
Where are nitrogen oxides often formed? Car engines
What is formed when sulfur dioxide mixes with water vapour in the clouds? Sulfuric acid is formed, causing acid rain
What is formed when nitrogen oxide mixes with water vapour in the clouds? Nitric acid is formed, causing acid rain
Why 2 reasons make acid rain dangerous? 1. It damages buildings and statues 2. It makes the soil more acidic, making it harder for plants to grow
What 2 dangerous substances does incomplete combustion produce? 1. Carbon monoxide 2. Particulates of soot (carbon)
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous? It binds irreversibly with haemoglobin in the blood, reducing the red blood cells' capacity to carry oxygen, leading to fainting, coma and death
What are the 2 adverse effects of soot? 1. Particles damage our lungs, causing respiratory problems 2. Forms clouds of smog which reflect light back to space
