Cells

6th Grade - Cells (theory, processes, structure and function)

Key Term/IdeaExplanation/Definition
golgi apparatus processing and packaging proteins that have exited the rough endoplasmic reticulum to be further transported inside and/or outside the cell.
chloroplast structure only in the plant cell that allows the plant to make its own food for energy
chlorophyll uses energy from the sun to produce a sugar called glucose that the plant uses for food.
cell theory 1- cells come from other existing cells. 2- cells are the basic unit of life 3- All organisms are composed of one or more cells.
cell homeostasis processes that include: obtaining energy, waste removal & reproducing
role of microscopes over time, the technology of this tool has evolved so scientists are able to learn and observe so much more about life.
cell wall this organelle provides shape, support, and protection to the cell and its organelles in plants
cytoplasm this organelle holds the components of the cell and protects them from damage. It also stores the molecules required for cellular processes.
mitochondria this organelle produces energy, regulates metabolism and promotes cell growth.
cell membrane also called the plasma membrane, this organelle regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell. Allows for mobility in animals.
vacuoles membrane-bound sacs within the cytoplasm of a cell that store materials and transport waste. Plant cells have one large vacuole that stores water for photosynthesis, animal cells have multiple smaller vacuoles.
nucleus not only the cells control center this organelle also houses the cell's DNA thats used for transcription and replication.
smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces cellular products like hormones and lipids and distributes those products throughout the cell and to places in the organism.
astrology the study of the supposed influences of the stars on human affairs by their positions in relation to each other
lysosome this organelle breaks down fats and sends
centriole aids in reproduction in the animal cell
astronomy the study of everything in the universe beyond Earth's atmosphere.
biology the study of life
chemistry the study of properties, composition, and structure of elements and compounds, how they can change
scientific law a rule that describes a pattern in the natural world. Example: the harder the ball is hit, the faster it will travel.
succrose a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose and is produces naturally in plants.
glucose a monosaccharide or simple sugar, making it the simplest type of carbohydrate.
fructose a monosaccharide that is a naturally occurring sugar found primarily in fruits

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
