Chemistry Vocab

Term
Atom the smallest particle of an element that retains its identity in a chemical reaction
atomic number the number of protons in an atom
average atomic mass the weighted average of the atomic masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element
Chemical Formula shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms
Coefficient (in chemical equation) Number that appears before the formula representing how many of each molecule or compound
Combustion Reaction a reaction in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen, often producing heat and light
Covalent Bond (Compound) a chemical bond in which two or more nonmetal atoms share electrons between them.
Decomposition reaction A reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances
Double-Replacement (Displacement) reaction a chem reaction where 2 compounds exchange ions and form two new compounds.
Electron A subatomic particle that has a negative charge and found outside the nucleus
Group (periodic table) a vertical (Up and down) column of elements in the periodic table
Ionic Bond (Compound) A metal/nonmetal bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions.
metallic bond (compound) a bond formed between two or more metal nuclei and the electrons around them
Neutron A subatomic particle that has no charge, found in the nucleus of an atom
Period (periodic table) A horizontal (side to side) row of elements in the periodic table
Polyatomic ion A covalently bonded group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and acts as a unit
Products (in chemical equation) a substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction
Proton A subatomic particle that has a positive charge, found in the nucleus of an atom
Reactants (in chemical equation) a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Single-Replacement (Displacement) reaction a chemical change in which one element replaces a second element in a compound
Subscript (in Chemical Equation) Small dropped number in a formula that tells how many of the element before are present.
Synthesis Reaction a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a new compound
Valence electron an atomic particle that is available to be lost, gained, or shared in the formation of chemical compounds

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
