Define synergism. Combinations of hormones have a greater effect on a target cell than the sum of the effects that each would have if acting alone.
What occurs during the phenomenon permissiveness? A small amount of one hormone allows a second hormone to have its full effect on a target cell; the first hormone “permits” the full action of the second hormone.
What is antagonism? One hormone pro-duces the opposite effect of another hormone.
What does the parathyroid secrete and to what affect? The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH is the main hormone the body uses to maintain calcium homeostasis.
The entire process of RBC formation is a type of hematopoiesis is called? erythropoiesis.
What are the three distinct layers of tissue make up the heart wall? The epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium.
What are the valves of the heart? The atrioventricular (AV) valves, cuspid valves and semilunar (SL) valves.
How are the heart or myocardial cells perfused? The right and left coronary arteries.
What are the layers of a blood vessel? The tunica externa, tunica media, and tunica intima.
What is the portal system? Blood flowing through the systemic circulation passes through two consecutive capillary beds rather than one.
