chapter 22 &23 vocab

QuestionAnswer
electromagnetic wave a wave that consists of electric and magnetic fields that vibrate at right angles to each other
radiation transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves
electromagnetic spectrum all of the frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation
asorption in optics, the transfer of light energy to particles of matter
scattering an interaction of light with matter that causes light to change its energy, direction of motion, or both
transparent describes matter that allows light to pass through with little interaction
translucent describes matter that transmits light but that does not transmit an image
opaque describes an object that is not transparent or translucent
pigment a substnce that gives another substance or a mixture its color
radiowaves have some of the longest wavelengths and the lowest frequencies of all EM waves. used for broadcasting radio signals
microwaves have shorter wavelenths and higher frequencies then radio waves.
infrared waves have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than microwaves.
ultraviolet light type of electromagnetic wave produced by the sun. shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than visible light
visible light the very narrow range of wavelengths and frequencies that humans can see. have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than infrared waves.
xrays can pass through many materials, except lead. shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies out of all the waves
gamma rays can penetrate most materials. second shortest wavelengths and second highest frequencies
transmission the passing of light or other form of energy through matter
_______________________________________________ _______________________________________________
plane mirror a mirror that has a flat surface
concave mirror a mirror that is curved inward like the insides of a spoon
convex mirror a mirror that curves outwards like the back of a spoon
lens a transparent object that refracts light waves such that they coverge or diverge to create an image
convex lens a lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges
concave lens a lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges
nearsightedness a condition in which the lens of the eye focuses distant objects in front of rather than in the retina
farsightedness a condition in which then lens of the eye focusesdistant objects behind rather than on the retina
laser a device that produces intense light of only one wavelength and color
hologram a piece of film that produces a three-dementional image of an object; made by using a laser light

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
