free enterprise | an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods ;investments that are determined by private decision rather than by state control. |
Cold War | the struggle for power between the United States and Soviet Union from the end of world war II |
Dwight D. Eisenhower | Commonly known as Ike, he was the 34th president of the U.S. (Republican) He was a 5 star army general before becoming president. |
Lyndon B. Johnson | Vice president to JFK, became the president after the JFK assassination. LBJ was from Texas and the 36th president of the U.S. |
civil rights | the rights due to all U.S. citizens under the constitution |
primary election | an election in which voters choose the candidates for general election |
National Aeronautics and Space Administration | commonly known as NASA. Located in Houston Texas, the world leader in space exploration |
International Space Station | a flying laboratory that orbits Earth and is home to astronauts from all around the world |
petrochemical | A substance made from oil or natural gas |
carbon black | a fine black powder made by heating oil at a high temperature |
boom-and-bust cycle | a prolonged period of great profits followed by a sharp decline |
OPEC | the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, a group of nations banded together to control the oil industry |
embargo | an order to stop trade with a certain nation |
hydraulic fracturing (fracking) | water and chemicals pumped under high pressure deep into the ground in order to break the Earth and release oil & gas |
maquiladoras | factories in Mexico owned by foreign investors |
agribusiness | large corporations whose business is farming |
hybrid | something that is made up of two different types of components |
NAFTA | the North American Free Trade Agreement- it removed most of the trade barriers between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada |
infrastructure | a system of public works, such as roads or bridges |
diversify | to become more varied |
retail | the sale of goods directly to the public |
research and development | an activity that leads to creating new products or procedures |
Michael Dell | Texas leader in science & technology, Dell began selling computers when he was a student at UT at Austin in the 1980's and now is one of the largest computer companies in the world |
fraud | something illegal that is said or done to trick a person for unfair gain |
limited convention | a convention in which only parts of the constitution may be changed |
George W. Bush | son of George H.W. Bush and former governor of Texas, George W. Bush was elected 43rd president of the U.S. in 2000 and re-elected in 2004 |
satellite | a human made object sent into space to orbit the Earth |
