Chemical Equations A shorthand way of reporting the details of a chemical reaction
Reactants the starting substances in a reaction that are placed on the left side of the equation
Products the substances formed during a chemical reaction that are placed on the right side of the equation
the arrow means "yeilds"
Coefficients used to balance equations; represent the number of molecules, formula units, or atoms of the substance
Law of Conservation of Mass Mass cannot be created or destroyed
Diatomic two atoms; the atoms are nitrogen, oxygen, flourine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and hydrogen

aq aqueous
Synthesis two or more substances combine to form a more complex substance A+B yeilds AB
Decomposition A single substance is broken down into two or more simpler substances AB yeilds A+B
Single replacement A free element replaces a less active element in a compound A+BY yeiilds Ay+B. Follow activity series
Activity Series an arangement of elements in the order of their tendency to react
Double replacement( also called matathesis) The element of reacting compounds replace each other. Normally takes place in an aqueous solution.
Precipitate an insoluble solid. represented by a S or downward arrow
Combustion Involves the reaction of substance with oxygen. Often called burningCxHy+O2 yeilds CO2+H2O
