incremental repetition the repetition of lines or stanzas with small but crucial changes made to a few words from one to the next, and has an effect of narrative progression or suspense
anaphora the repetition of a word or sequence of words at the beginning of successive clauses, phrases, or sentences
oxymoron a figure of speech that puts together opposite elements in a PHRASE
alliteration when two or more words are linked that share the same FIRST consonant sound
chiasmus a literary device in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order
polyptoton a figure of speech that involves the repetition of words derived from the same root
Conceits an often unconventional, logically complex, or surprising metaphor whose delights are more intellectual than sensual
Hyperboles the deliberate use of exaggeration to create heightened emotion, evoke imagery, or emphasize particular feelings or situations
Enumeration the technique in which a writer spends lines of poetry, paragraphs of prose, or other explaining parts of the plot. Often, it’s used to emphasize a certain situation or action
Personification the projection of human characteristics onto inanimate objects in order to create imagery
Simile a comparison between two unlike things that uses the words “like” or “as”
Metaphors describe an object, person, situation, or action in a way that helps a reader understand it, without using “like” or “as”
Antithesis when two contrasting ideas are put together to achieve a desired outcome in a STATEMENT
Assonance when two or more words are linked that share the same vowel sound
Consonance when two or more words are linked that share the same LAST consonant sound
Pararhyme when two or more words are linked that share the same FIRST and LAST sound
Metonymy the act of referring to something using a word that describes one of its qualities or features
Parallelism the use of matching sentence structure, phrases, or longer parts so as to balance ideas of equal importance
Juxtaposition putting things that are not similar next to each other to highlight their differences or create a specific emotional or thematic impact
