Question | Answer |
---|---|
astronomy | a unit that teaches stuff beyond the earths atmosphere |
axis | An imaginary straight line on which an object rotates. |
rotation | When an object spins it is said to be rotating. |
revolution | When something is moving in a circle around another object such as the way the Moon Circles the Earth it is said to revolve around that object. |
orbit | The path one object takes around another. |
tilt | tilt occurs when a planet rotates around an axis that is tilted relative to the plane of its revolution around a larger object. |
solstice | 22 June, and 22 December. Time of the year when the day is either shortest, or longest depending on where you are. |
equinox | March 21st, and September 22nd. Twice a year, when the day and night are the same amount of time all around the world. |
phase | The apparent change in the shape of the Moon, Mercury, and Venus due to how much of the sunlit side is facing the Earth. |
eclipse | When our view of one object in the sky is blocked by either another object, or the Earths shadow. |
gravity | the attractive force between two objects; its magnitude depends on their mass and the distence between them. |
tide | The rise and fall of the level of water in the ocean. |
Satellite | A satellite is any object that orbits around another, larger body, such as the Moon |
telescope | For the past 400 years, telescopes have helped astronomers see into the depths of outer space. |
geocentric | Simply means the Earth in the Center. People used to believe the Universe was geocentric, or that the Earth was in the center of the Universe. |
heliocentric | measured or considered as being seen from the center of the sun. |
inner planet | any of the four planets closest to the sun: Mercury, Venus, the earth, or Mars |
outer planet | any of the five planets with orbits outside the orbit of Mars: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto |
comet | a celestial body moving about the sun, usually in a highly eccentric orbit, consisting of a central mass surrounded by an envelope of dust and gas that may form a tail that streams away from the sun. |
asteroid | Also called minor planet. Astronomy. any of the thousands of small bodies of from 480 miles (775 km) to less than one mile (1.6 km) in diameter that revolve about the sun in orbits lying mostly between those of Mars and Jupiter. |
meteroid | any of the small bodies, often remnants of comets, traveling through space: when such a body enters the earth's atmosphere it is heated to luminosity and becomes a meteor. |
constellation | any of the small bodies, often remnants of comets, traveling through space. |
galaxy | a large system of stars held together by mutual gravitation and isolated from similar systems by vast regions of space. |
universe | the totality of known or supposed objects and phenomena throughout space; the cosmos; macrocosm. |
Milky Way | the spiral galaxy containing our solar system |
