sub-Saharan Africa region of Africa that is located south of the Sahara Desert
nomad someone who does not lead a settled life but moves from place to place, usually seeking pasture or water for herds of grazing animals
subsistence farming farming that provides for the basic needs of the farmer's family, with little or nothing left over to sell
ethnic group a group of people who share common characteristics, such as language, physical appearance, customs, and traditions
religious group a group of people who share a common belief system but are not necessarily composed of a single ethnic group
Arab most common ethnic group in northern Africa
Ashanti ethnic group that lives mainly in the African country of Ghana
Bantu ethnic group that originated from a group of tribes in Africa more than 4,000 years ago
Swahili ethnic group that lives in southeastern Africa

deforestation removal of trees and other vegetation to make land available for other uses
desertification the transformation of land once suitable for agriculture into a desert
