What is 'gender' theme in the play? How the male characters behave towards the females in the play (highlights gender & inequality)
What is 'class' theme in the play? a middle-class family involved in the death of a working-class girl
When was An Inspector Calls first performed in the UK? 1946, just after the end of WW2
How does the play explore 'social responsibility'? 1) the treatment of Eva Smith. 2) how each character does or doesn’t take responsibility for their behaviour. 3) the Inspector's lessons
How does Sheila feel socially responsible? she is shocked when she learns that she had a part to play in Eva’s death
How does Mr Birling NOT feel socially responsible? he refuses to take any responsibility for Eva Smith’s death
How does Eric feel socially responsible? he shows that he takes responsibility for his actions in the final act of the play
How does Mrs Birling NOT feel socially responsible? she will not take any responsibility for the death of Eva Smith even after she has been questioned by the Inspector
How is the Inspector socially responsible? he suggests that it is irresponsible to be greedy and 'take' things without permission
