All Life Science Vocabulary Words

TermDefinition
Living Element (Biotic) Part of an ecosystem that requires energy to survive and has basic needs met in order to survive. Ex. Plant or animal
Non Living Element (Abiotic) Part of an ecosystem that is not living such as the sun, water, air, rocks or soil
Ecosystem The living and nonliving parts of an area that interact with each other.

Organism Any living thing
Producer An organism that makes its own food
Consumer An organism that gets its energy from eating other organisms
Predator An organism that hunts and kills other organisms for food
Prey An organism that is hunted and eaten by a predator
Parasite An organism that must live on or inside another living organism in order to get its energy.
Host The organism that parasite lives on or in
Decomposer An organism that breaks down dead organisms and waste
Decomposition The process in which dead organisms are broken down and returned to the soil
Food Chain Shows the path of energy from one organism to another
Food Web Many overlapping food chains linked together (Remember
Herbivore Animals that eat only plants (Cows, zebras, giraffes, horses, rhinos, rabbits, pandas, deer, buffalo, elephants)
Carnivore Animals that eat only meat (Lions, snakes, owls, wolves)
Omnivore Animals that eat both plants and animals (Humans, nears, raccoons, mice, chickens, hogs)
Habitat The area where a population of a species lives
Aquarium A transparent tank where fish and other water organisms are kept
Terrarium A transparent container full of plants that can house small animals
Environment The surroundings/area where an organism lives
Population All of the same type of organisms living in the same environment
Species A group of organisms of the same kind that can produce offspring like themselves
Community All of the populations living together in the same environment
Niche The role or job and organism plays in its environment
Competition Organisms fight against another species to reach a goal, usually to survive or reproduce
Endangered A plant or animal that is found in such small numbers that is almost extinct
Extinct A plant or animal species that is no longer alive
Nocturnal Active at nights and sleeps in the day (bats)
Camouflage To blend in to one’s surroundings
Vegetation All the plant life in an ecosystem
Interdependence The living things depending on each other
Migration The seasonal movement of animals from one place to another
Hibernation An animal’s body processes slowing down for survival in extreme conditions
Mimicry To pretend to be or look like another organism for protection (coral snake)
Role The part it plays, its position or duty
Offspring New organisms that come from a parent organism
Inherited Traits A characteristic that is passed from parents to offspring ( Hair color, eye color, skin tone
Heredity The passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring
Instinct A behavior an animal does without being taught ( migration, hibernation, building a nest, spinning a web)
Structural Adaptation Physical features of an organism ( fur)
Adaptation Something an organism has that helps it survive. (wings for flying, claws, beak)
Learned Behaviors A characteristic that an organism learns by observing other organisms (reading, playing sports, dancing, having nice manners)
Life Cycle The stages of growth and development that an organism goes through during its lifetime
Overpopulation A population that is greater than the resources available in an ecosystem
