forces and motion
Term | Definition |
---|---|
gravity | the force that atracts an object to it. |
mass | the amount of matter or substance that makes up an object |
weight | a measure of the gravitational force with which an object is drawn to the center of a massive second object, |
push | when you use force to move a thing (object) away from you. |
pull | to exert force upon so as to cause or tend to cause motion toward the force. |
friction | a force that resists the sliding or rolling of one surface over another |
force | an action that changes or maintains the motion of a body or object |
motion | the process of an object moving or being moved |
velocity | a measure of how fast something moves in a particular direction |
inertia | the tendency of a body to resist a change in motion or rest |
2'nd law | acceleration (gaining speed) happens when a force acts on a mass (object) |
speed | the rate at which someone or something moves or travels. |
position | the place where someone or something is in relation to other people or things. |
Axis | the imaginary straight line that something (such as the Earth) turns around. |
Unbalanced forces | are not equal, and they always cause the motion of an object to change the speed and/or direction that it is moving. |
Accelaration | the rate at which the speed of a moving object changes over time |
direction | a course along which someone or something moves |
Air resistence | the frictional force air exerts against a moving object |
momentum | a measurement of mass in motion |
resist | to fight against or oppose |
decelaration | the slowing down of an object |
Newtons first law | an object in motion stays in motion unless a force acts upon it. |
newtons third law | for every action (force) there is an equal and opposite reaction (force) |
