Unit 6 Vocabulary

General Academic and Domain-Specific vocabulary with context clue practice.

VocabularyContext CluesDefinition
Credited During the school assembly, the principal credited several students for their achievements. Applause filled the auditorium as proud students held certificates. To publicly acknowledge or give recognition to someone for their accomplishments or contributions.
Foster The family decided to foster a rescue puppy, providing love and care. The children played eagerly, helping the furry friend feel welcome. To promote the growth or development of; to nurture and care for.
Gallant The knight's gallant act bravely rescued the princess from the dragon. Swift and courageous, he faced danger head-on. Brave, heroic, or chivalrous in a noble way.
Reign The queen's reign marked prosperity and cultural flourishing. The period of her rule brought advancements in arts and sciences. The period during which a monarch or ruler holds power.
Blotch The artist spilled ink, creating an unintended blotch on the canvas. A large, irregular stain altered the painting's intended design. A large, irregular spot or stain, often unintentional.
Cavern Explorers entered a vast cavern with walls adorned in sparkling crystals. Despite the dark, the cavern revealed beauty in its depths. A large, natural underground chamber, typically in a hillside or cliff.
Dissipated After the storm, clouds gradually dissipated, revealing a clear blue sky. To disperse or scatter; to cause to disappear.
Fragments The old manuscript, torn and damaged, revealed only fragments of the original text. Small, broken pieces of something, often referring to a part of a whole.
Sinewy The athlete's sinewy muscles flexed as he lifted heavy weights, showcasing strength and power. Strong, tough, and well-developed, especially in reference to muscles.
Cherished The elderly woman held a cherished locket, a precious keepsake from her youth. The worn pendant showed the love she held for it. Deeply loved and valued; held dear.
Cowers The timid kitten cowers in the corner at loud noises, seeking safety and comfort. To crouch or shrink back in fear; to cringe.
Demonstration The science teacher's exciting demonstration created a colorful chemical reaction. A practical display or exhibition, often for explanatory purposes.
Doffs The respectful waiter doffs his hat as he welcomes guests to the elegant dining room. To remove or tip one's hat as a gesture of respect or greeting.
Intently The detective listened intently to the witness's account, focusing on every detail. With great concentration or attention; focusing closely on something.
Scurry As the leaves rustled, small creatures scurried through the bushes, their quick movements creating a lively dance in the underbrush. To move quickly with short, hurried steps; often used to describe small animals.
Torrent The rain poured in torrents, creating a rhythmic symphony on the roof. A strong and fast-moving stream of water; a heavy downpour.
Blot A single blot on the canvas, like an ink stain on a blank page, can change the entire tone of an artwork, creating a focal point of imperfection. A small, often unintended mark or stain, especially on a surface.
Flinch Despite the sudden loud noise, the brave soldier did not flinch, standing still despite the coming army. To make a sudden, small movement, usually out of fear or anticipation.
Resolute The explorer remained resolute in the face of adversity, determined to reach the summit of the towering mountain. Admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering in pursuing one's goals.
Jut The jagged rocks jutted out from the cliff, forming a challenge for climbers to navigate the steep ascent carefully. To extend or stick out sharply, often used to describe protruding objects or features.
Mound The children built a mound of sand on the beach, shaping it into a fortress with turrets and moats, their laughter filling the air. A raised area or pile of a particular substance, often shaped by human hands or natural forces.
Wizened The wizened old storyteller, with deep lines etched on his face, captivated the audience with tales of ancient wisdom and bygone eras. Shriveled or wrinkled with age, often describing a person's appearance.
