Venipuncture Procedures

bedside manner the behavior of a healthcare provider toward or as perceived by a patient
patient identification the process of verifying a patient's identity, is the most crucial step in specimen collection
medical record number (MR) a set of numbers and letters or other characters that is unique to that patient
cognitive impairment involves trouble concentrating, remembering, and making decisions.
needle phobia intense fear of needles
belonephobia a persistent irrational fear of pins and needles
reflux backflow
recumbent lying down
palpate examine by touch or feel; using the index finger and push down on the skin
patency state of being freely open
turgid a patent vein; distended from being filled with blood
needle sheath cap or cover
anchor secure firmly
taut pulled tight without slack
label the tubes in front of the patient immediately after blood collection to avoid errors
labels should include first & last name ( middle initial if needed), MR #, DOB, date & time of collection, Phlebotomist's initials
capillary collection is normally recommended for pediatric patients, especially newborns & infants up to 12 mths old
EMLA (mixture of local anesthetics is a topical anesthetic containing lidocaine & prilocaine
geriatric means relating to old age
dialysis is a procedure in which patients whose kidneys do not function adequately have their blood artificially filtered to remove waste product.
hospice is a type of care for patients who are terminally ill
