Continental Shelf | gently sloping section that starts at the shoreline and continues to the steeply inclined section (top of the slide) |
Continental Slope | Steeply inclined section of the continental margin (middle of the slide) |
Abyssal Plain | flat areas of deep sediments |
Mid-Ocean Ridge | long, underwater mountain chains created by divergent plates |
Deep Ocean Trenches | deep underwater valleys created by subduction (deepest part of the ocean) |
Sea Mounts | underwater volcanic mountains |
Volcanic Islands | ocean floor features protrude above sea level formed from volcanoes |
Continental Rise | gently sloping section located between the continental slope and the ocean basin (bottom of the slide) |
Guyot | an underwater mountain that has been made flat on top by wave erosion |
Submarine Canyon | steep valley cut into the continental margin, created by river or glacier erosion thousands of years ago |
