Castles | A large building, typically of the medieval period, fortified against attack with thick walls, battlements, towers, and in many cases a moat. |
Charlemagne | Ruled over the Franks, one of the most influential kings, set up a palace school, ordered nobles to set up schools and libraries where Latin, the language of the catholic church, was used.Promoted Christianity. |
Chivalry | Code of conduct in medieval Europe that required knights to be brave, loyal, and honest |
Feudalism | A strict social system in which landowners grant people land or other rewards in exchange for military service or labor |
Fiefs | Estate granted by a lord or vassal |
Knight | Warrior mounted on horseback. Household retainer |
Lord | Noble who held land, more generic term |
Manor | Self-sufficient estate of a medieval lord |
Manorialism | Economic basis for middle age society. Lived in manors run by lords and head vassals |
Noble | Was given land and owed services to a lord |
Obligations | Exchanged in a feudal contract, what one side of the contract owes the other |
Serf | A peasant who is legally bound to live and work on land owned by a lord |
Peasant | Free man who lived in the village, still worked almost as long as a serf, Only difference is the serfs are unable to move |
Oath | Formal pledge exchanged in a feudal contract |
Vassal | A person in the Middle Ages who received protection and land from a lord in return for loyalty and service |
What caused Feudalism? | Gap between rich and poor War/vikings Based on a mutually agreed upon contract of rights and obligations (feudal contract) Need for reliable source of food supply |
What was the purpose of a feudal contract | T ensure that people would remain faithful to the lord |
What was the REALITY of the hierarchy of the middle ages | Priests and Clergy (Spiritual guides)→ Nobles (Protectors, Defenders)→ Serfs and peasants (The whole society is based on their labor of the land) |
What was the ACTUAL of the hierarchy of the middle ages | King → Church and Lords → Knights→ Serfs and Peasants |
