autocratic a government where political authority rests with a single leader
democratic a government where political authority rests with a nation's citizens
political party an organization which represents a specific political agenda and socioeconomic positions within a given nation
president title often given to the head of government (and state) in a presidential democracy
prime minister title often given to the head of government in a parliamentary democracy
parliamentary democracy citizens elect the legislature to represent their interests & pass laws on their behalf. These legislators elect the chief executive. This head of government is selected from among the members of the leading political party.
presidential democracy the citizens elect both the legislators and its chief executive. The head of government (and state) is directly accountable to the voters who put him/her in power. Ex: Mexico & Brazil
dissident a person who opposes the authority of an established government
Brazil's Executive Branch President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva; the president may serve up to two consecutive four-year terms.
Brazil's Legislative Branch bicameral National Congress; The Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies make up the National Congress.
Mexico's Executive Branch President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador; a president may serve one six-year term in office.
Mexico's Legislative Branch bicameral National Congress made up of the Senate (upper house) and the Chamber of Deputies (lower house)
Cuba's Executive Branch President Miguel Diaz-Canel; the nation's president is not directly elected by the people, but rather appointed by the nation's Communist party. Once in power, the president may stand for an unlimited number of terms in office.
Cuba's Legislative Branch unicameral National Assembly of People's Power; all legislative representatives must be members of the Communist Party (PCC)
Cuba's Government Autocracy; citizens aged 16 and older vote for legislators to represent them; however, the vote is essentially meaningless as all legislative representatives must be members of the Communist Party (PCC.)
Brazil's Government Presidential Democracy; voting is permitted as early as age 16; however, all citizens aged 18-70 are required to vote.
Mexico's Government Presidential Democracy; Voting is permitted for those 18 years of age and older.
