Gaming Terms

TermDefinition
AI AI is the engine that determines an NPC's behavior in the game world.
Anime A style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes.
Console An electronic device that outputs a video signal or image to display a video game that can be played with a game controller.
Cut scene A narrative device in which the game pauses play to deliver a short cinematic sequence.
ESA The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is the trade association for the video game industry in the United States.
ESRB Rating Provide information about what's in a game or app so parents and consumers can make informed choices about which games are right for their family.
First Person Shooter A first-person shooter (FPS) is a video game centered on gun fighting and other weapon-based combat seen from a first-person perspective, with the player experiencing the action directly through the eyes of the main character.
FPS (Frames Per Second) FPS, or Frames Per Second, is a measure of the rate at which a computer video game can produce and render frames. Generally, the higher the FPS number, the smoother and more engaging gameplay will be for users.
Game screens Any of various interactive games played using a specialized electronic gaming device or a computer or mobile device and a television or other display screen
Genre An informal classification of a video game based on how it is played rather than visual or narrative elements.
Gone Gold It has reached the point where it is finished and ready for release.
Grind Grinding is a term used in video game culture, referring to the act of repeating an action or set of actions.
Janky A player's perception that a videogame does not behave in the ways that it should.
Level Any space available to the player during the course of completion of an objective.
Loot The collection of items picked up by the player character that increase their power or level up their abilities, such as currency, spells, equipment and weapons.
MMO A massively multiplayer online game is an online video game with a large number of players on the same server.
Pixels Pixels are the smallest unit in a digital display. Up to millions of pixels make up an image or video on a device's screen.
Platform Video games are developed to be played on a gaming platform that provides a player experience.
Quest A quest, or mission, is a task in video games that a player-controlled character, party, or group of characters may complete in order to gain a reward.
Realm A realm is a game world existing only for a few thousands players within it.
RPG A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which each participant assumes the role of a character that can interact within the game's imaginary world.
Sprites A sprite is a term commonly used in computer graphics and gaming to refer to a two-dimensional image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene or game environment.
Top-down A camera angle that shows the player and the area around them from above.
