Ratios and Proportional Relationships

TermDefinition
Complex Fraction A fraction that contains one or more fractions in its numerator or denominator
Constant A value that does not change
Constant of Proportionality A constant ratio of two variables related proportionally
Equivalent Ratios Two ratios that have the same value
Percent Decrease A percent change describing a decrease in quantity
Percent Increase A percent change describing an increase in quantity
Percentage A ratio that compares numbers to 100
Principal The amount of money borrowed
Proportion An equation stating that two quantities are equal
Rate A ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units
Rate of Change A ratio that compares the amount of change in a dependent variable to the amount of change in an independent variable
Ratio A comparison between two quantities by division
Scale drawing A two-dimensional representation of an actual object or place
Scale factor The ratio of any two corresponding lengths in two similar geometric figures
Similar triangle Triangles that have the same shape, but their sizes may vary
Simple Interest Interest earned only on the original principal
Slope The rate of change of a function. The slope of a line can be determined by calculating the rise divided by the run of a graph (m = rise/run)
Steepness Represents the rate at which the line is increasing or decreasing
Unit rate A rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit
