3 Types of Heat Transfer

QuestionAnswer
what is earth? a planet that supports life.
The sun is the source of all energy in our what? atmosphere.
what are the 3 things that happen when Earth receives energy from the sun? Some energy is reflected back into space. Some is absorbed by the atmosphere. Some is absorbed by land and water.
The balance among these 3 determines the what of our atmosphere and the life it supports? characteristics
what are the 3 Types of Heat Transfer? Radiation, Conduction and Convection.
what is Radiation? the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
what is Convection? the transfer of heat by the flow of a heated material.
what is Conduction? the direct transfer of energy when molecules bump into each other.
how does Energy from the sun reach Earth? radiation.
Radiant energy can pass through what? space
is Radiation and heat two different things? yes
what does heat do? transfer of energy from object with high temp. to an object with lower temp.
Most radiation coming from Earth’s surface is what? absorbed and heats up our atmosphere.
Conduction is direct contact between two what? objects, like warm land or water directly heating the air mass above it.
what is the example of conduction? walking barefoot on hot pavement.
what plays a role in heating the atmosphere after radiation and conduction? Convection.
what occurs in gases and liquids? Convection.
As cold air becomes more dense what does it do? it pushes up warmer air creating a convection current.
It is what cycling of warm/cold currents that drives weather patterns? Convection
where does energy come from? the sun.
