Term | Definition |
---|---|
1. Pangaea | The theory that all the continents were once part of a supercontinent |
2. Continental drift | The theory that all the continents are in constant motion on the surface of Earth |
3. Mid-ocean ridge | The mountain ranges in the middle of the ocean |
4. seafloor spreading | the process by which new oceanic crust forms along a mid-ocean ridge and older oceanic crust moves away from the ridge |
5. normal polarity | a state in which mangnetized objects will orient themselves to point north |
6. magnetic reversal | when the magnetic field reverses direction |
7. reversed polarity | a state in which mangnetized objects would reverse direction and point south |
8. plate tectonics | a theory that Earth's surface is made of ridge slabs of rock, or plates, that move with respect to each other |
9. lithosphere | the cold and rigid outermost rock layer |
10. divergent plate boundary | forms where two plates seperate |
11. transform plate boundary | forms where two plates slide past each other |
12. convergent plate boundary | forms where two plates collide |
13. subduction | a process where the denser plate sinks below the more buoyant plate |
14. convection | the circulation of material caused by differences in the temperature and density |
15. ridge push | a force that pushes away plates |
16. slab pull | a force that pulls in plates |
