1. Pangaea The theory that all the continents were once part of a supercontinent
2. Continental drift The theory that all the continents are in constant motion on the surface of Earth
3. Mid-ocean ridge The mountain ranges in the middle of the ocean
4. seafloor spreading the process by which new oceanic crust forms along a mid-ocean ridge and older oceanic crust moves away from the ridge
5. normal polarity a state in which mangnetized objects will orient themselves to point north
6. magnetic reversal when the magnetic field reverses direction
7. reversed polarity a state in which mangnetized objects would reverse direction and point south
8. plate tectonics a theory that Earth's surface is made of ridge slabs of rock, or plates, that move with respect to each other
9. lithosphere the cold and rigid outermost rock layer
10. divergent plate boundary forms where two plates seperate
11. transform plate boundary forms where two plates slide past each other
12. convergent plate boundary forms where two plates collide
13. subduction a process where the denser plate sinks below the more buoyant plate
14. convection the circulation of material caused by differences in the temperature and density
15. ridge push a force that pushes away plates
16. slab pull a force that pulls in plates
