Anatomy quiz 1

TermDefinitionComponents within System
Integumentary system Produces vitamin D and regulates body temperature. Protects the body from the external environment and retains water. Skin, hair, nails, and glands
skeletal system Supports the body and protects internal organs. Produces blood cells and stores calcium salts. Bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints.
Muscular system Produces movement, Controls body openings and generates heat. Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles.
Nervous system Regulates body functions via nerve impulses. Brain, spinal cord, neurons, and neuroglial cells
endocrine system Regulates body functions via chemicals called hormones. Pituitary, hypothalamus, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries and testes glands
cardiovascular system Pumps and delivers oxygen- poor blood to the lungs and oxygen-rich blood to the tissues. Transports cells, nutrients and other substances. Heart, blood vessels, and blood
lymphatic system Returns excess tissue fluid to the cardiovascular system Provides immunity (protection against disease. Lymphatic vessels, lymphatic tissue, and lymphatic organs such as tonsils, lymphatic nodes, spleen, and thymus
Respiratory system Delivers oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide from the body. Nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.
Digestive system Mechanically and chemically digests food materials. Regulates fluid, electrolytes, and acid-base balance. Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and the accessory organs such as teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
urinary system Filters and removes metabolic wastes from the blood. Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
reproductive system (male) produces and transports sperm and secretes hormones such as testosterone. testes, scrotum, duct system, penis, and accessory sex glands such as seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands.
Reproductive system (female) Site of fertilization of oocyte and growth and development of the embryo and fetus Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, female external genitalia, and mammary glands.
visceral layer inner layer; touches the organ
parietal layer outer layer; attaches to surrounding structures
serous fluid between the layers; lubricates to prevent friction
oblique plane used to study a section at an angle
frontal plane (vertical plane) divides the body/part into anterior and posterior parts
transverse plane (horizontal plane or cross section) divides the Body/part into a superior and inferior part
parasagittal plane divides into unequal sections
midsagittal plane (median plane) divides into equal sections
sagittal plane divides the body/part into right and left sections
cranial cavity Is in the dorsal cavity.... houses the brain the skull forms protection around the organ
spinal or vertebral cavity is in the dorsal cavity houses the spinal cord the vertebrae protects this organ
thoracic cavity is in the ventral cavity houses organs within 3 smaller cavities, is formed by the ribcage houses the heart(pericardial cavity), lungs(pleural cavity), esophagus and trachea(mediastinum cavity)
abdominopelvic cavity is in the ventral cavity houses many organs no bones protect this area
Dorsal body cavity found on posterior side of the body contains 2 subcavitities; cranial cavity and spinal/vertebral cavity
ventral body cavity found on anterior side of body contains 2 main divisions separated by the diaphragm; thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity
pelvic cavity contains the bladder, reproductive organs and some GI organs
abdominal cavity contains the gastrointestinal(GI) systems
parietal layer outer layer; attached to surrounding structures
visceral layer inner layer; touches the organ
serous fluid between the layers; lubricates to prevent friction
