Numerator The top number in a fraction
Reciprocal Flipping a fraction
Improper Fraction A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator
Mixed Number A number made up of a whole number, which is not zero, and a fraction
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction
Natural Numbers A set of numbers that only contain positive counting numbers
Integers The set of whole numbers and their opposites
Whole Numbers A set of numbers that only include positive counting numbers and zero
Rational Numbers Any number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers (as a fraction a/b).
Repeating Decimal A decimal in which one or more of the digits repeat infinitely
Terminating Decimal A decimal number that comes to an end; does not repeat
Negative Numbers Numbers that are less than zero
Positive Numbers Numbers that are greater than zero
Absolute Value A number’s distance from zero on the number line
Opposite Two numbers that are equal distance from zero but on opposite sides of the number line
Coefficient The number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression (3a)
Inequality A mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equivalent
Constant A value that does not change

Rate of Change A rate that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another quantity
Proportion A statement that two rates or ratios are equivalent
Origin The point on the coordinate plane where both axes cross, (0,0)
Proportional Relationship A relationship between two quantities in which the ratio of one quantity to the other quantity is constant
Constant of Proportionality The constant value (often written k) relating amounts that rise or fall uniformly together. k = y/x
