vehicle classification relates to the construction, size, shape, number of doors, type of roof, and other criteria of a motor vehicle
Body over frame vehicles have separate body and chassis parts bolted to the frame
frame rails long steel members that extend along the sides of the vehicle
torque boxes are the structural parts of the frame designed to allow some twisting to absorb road shock and collision impact.
frame horn is at the very front of the frame rails where the bumper attaches.
crossmembers are thick metal stampings that extend sideways across the frame rails
spring hangers are sometimes formed on the frame to hold the suspension system springs
rubber body insulators are used between the frame and body to reduce noise and vibration.
frame is an independent, separate part because it is not welded to any of the major units of the body shell
perimeter frame has the frame rail near the outside, or perimeter, of the vehicle
ladder frame has long frame rails with a series of straight crossmembers formed in several locations.
partial frame is a cross between a solid frame and a unibody
Sub frame assemblies are used at the front and rear while the unibody supports the middle area of the vehicle
stressed hull structure The egg shell concept, all the force applied by your finger is not concentrated in one place but is dispersed over the shell surface
space frame vehicle has a metal body structure covered with an outer skin of plastic or composite panels.
support members are often bolted to the bottom of the unibody to hold the engine, transmission, and suspension in alignment.
stationary parts like the floor, roof, and quarter panels, are permanently welded or adhesive bonded into place.
hinged parts like doors, hood, and deck lids, will swing up and open.
