QuestionAnswer
What is Hydrology? An Earth science describing distribution, properties, and movement of water through the environment
Why is hydrology relevant to engineers? 1.) Water is a resource 2.) Water can be a hazard 3.) Infrastructure can impact water
What are the four main fates of precipitated water? a.) Interception b.) Depression storage c.) Infiltration d.) Overland flow (runoff)
What is the reason we can often assumed the change in storage over a long period is negligible? S changes due to storms, seasons but similar at certain times of the year
What is the definition of cumulative probability? The likelihood that an outcome is less than or equal to a specified value
When might a normal distribution be used in hydrology? Average annual streamflow for large streams
When might a lognormal distribution be used in hydrology? Precipitation rates
When might a log-Pearson Type III distribution be used in hydrology? Annual max streamflow
When might a Gumbel distribution be used in hydrology? Annual max precipitation
What is the relationship between the normal and lognormal distributions? Lognormal distributions are normal distributions transformed by log(x)
What are 3 things precipitation needs in order to occur? 1.) Humidity 2.) Updrafts 3.) Cloud seeds (dust, ash, etc.)
What are the 3 ways to measure precipitation? 1.) Satellites 2.) Radar 3.) Rain guages
