bone structure
Term | Definition |
---|---|
long bones | longer than they are wide the location is arms and legs |
short bones | equal in length and width the location is wrists and ankles |
flat bones | thinner and can be either flat or curved it includes skull ribs and sternum |
irregular bones | odd in shape it includes hip bones and vertebrae |
periosteum | fibrous tissue covering bones, contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves, acts as anchor points for ligaments |
ligament | connects bone to bone |
tendon | connects muscle to bone |
epiphysis | |
diaphysis | |
yellow bone marrow | high fat content, it converts to red bone marrow if it ever runs out |
red bone marrow | makes blood cells. found in flat bones and spongy part of long bones |
compact bone | dense, hard tissue that forms diaphysis of long bones and outer layer of others |
osteocytes | cell that builds bone, mature cells circle around blood vessels |
osteoclasts | cells that break bone down |
spongy bones | contains holes to allow space for red bone marrow, holes give a spongy appearance |
hemopoiesis | the production of cells inside of the bone marrow |
depressions | act as a pathway for nerves and blood vessles |
projections | |
ossification | formation of bone in the body |
osteopregenitor cells | non specialized cells found in periosteum, endosteum, and central canal of contact bones. it can turn into other types of cells as needed |
osteoblasts | cells that actually form bones |
osteocytes | mature bone cells |
osteoclasts | come from a type of wbc called monocyte found in rbm , breaks down bone to release calcium |
epiphysis plate | exsists as long as bones need to grow it is controlled by hormones |
