Definition/Vocabulary

Mechanical Energy Is the sum of an object’s kinetic energy and potential energy
Sound energy Sound energy results from the vibration of particle
Energy transformation Takes place when energy changes from one form into another form
Law of conservation of energy States that energy cannot be created or destroyed
Efficiency Is the ratio of useful output energy to input energy
Kinetic Theory of matter States that all of the particles that makes up matter are constantly in motion
Degrees Are equally spaced units between two points
Thermometer Temperature is measured using an instrument
Thermal energy Is the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance
Heat is the energy transferred to an object at a lower temperature
Calorie Is the equal to the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 g of water by 1 C
Conduction Is the transfer of energy as heat from one substance to another through direct contact
Conductor Is a material that transfers heat very well
Insulator Is a material that is a poor conductor of heat
Convection Is the transfer of energy as heat by the movement of a liquid or gas
Radiation Is the transfer of energy of electromagnetic waves
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves.
Chemical Energy Chemical energy is the energy stored in chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together.
Thermal Energy and Heat Thermal energy is the energy an object has due to the motion of its molecules.
Nuclear Energy The nucleus of an atom is the source of nuclear energy.
