Drafting Final Terms

QuestionAnswer
Planimetric Northing and Easting
Topographic Northing, Easting, and Elevations
Contour Lines imaginary line connecting points of equal elevation
Contour Intervals difference in elevation between adjacent contour lines
Types of Contours Index, Intermediate, and Supplementary
Contour Equation X LP = (LP-RC)/(LP-RP) x Distance
Cross Section a view that cuts through an area to show detail that cannot be clearly identified in the plan view
Profile a cross section of a portion of land or along the length of a linear feature such as a road, sewer line, power line, or stream
Vertical Alignment defines the vertical form, or change in elevation, of a route on a vertical plane, or profile
Profile Leveling similar to standard differential leveling but additional intermediate shots are taken along the centerline of the route
Plan and Profile a type of drawing that combines the plan view of a project, or often a specific portion of a project, with the corresponding profile of the plan below
Cutting Plane Line a line drawn on a plan view to show the location of a cross section cut
Invert Elevation Represents the bottom inside of a pipe
Vertical Alignment defines the vertical form, or change in elevation, of a route on a vertical plane, or profile
Vertical Curve a feature that is provided to change vertical alignment between different slopes
Sag Curve a vertical curve that changes the vertical alignment of a road from downhill to level or downhill to uphill
Crest or Summit Curve a vertical curve that changes the vertical alignment of a road from uphill to level or uphill to downhill
Tangent Distance the measurement from the grade line to the profile of the curve at a station point
Ordinate the tangent distance from the top of the curve to the grade tangent line at each horizontal station point
Earthwork a term used in construction to describe quantities of earth excavated from or Filled areas
Cut and Fill a term used in construction to describe the method of cutting, or removing by excavating, material from a location to use to fill, or add, material to a different location
Angle of Repose the steepest slope at which a specific material is stable. The angle of repose is determined primarily by the type of soil or rock to be cut through or used as fill material. This value can be expressed as a horizontal angle or a ratio of run to rise.
Percent Slope = Percent Grade A 1% grade rises 1’ vertically for every 100’ horizontally. (1/100)(100) = 1%
Full Station 100 feet
Plus Station Specifies a point between full stations
Stationing locates station points every 100 feet from the beginning of the project

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
