Civil Liberties: freedoms we have to think and act without government interference
Censorship: cannot ban printed materials or films merely because they contain alarming or offensive ideas
**Slander: spreading spoken lies
Libel: printed lies
Indictment: a formal charge by a group of people
**Due process: following established legal procedures
**Suffrage: the ability/right to vote
**Poll tax: paying to vote; this was don to lower the number of lower-income people from voting
**Discrimination: unfair treatment based on prejudice
**Segregation: social separation of races
Civil Rights: the rights of full citizenship and equality under the law
Importance of Media (Zenger Case): he was put in prison for criticizing the government; led to 1st Amendment- freedom of press
Voting Rights Amendments: 15th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 23rd,26th
Civil Rights Amendments: 13th, 14th, 15th
**Examples of Restricting Voting: hours polling places have, physical address required, ID
**Bail Money or property that the accused person gives to the court as a guarantee that he or she will appear for trial
**7th Amendment: Explains the ability to have a Civil trial heard by a jury
**9th Amendment: Rights in the constitution are guaranteed, people have implied rights
**10th Amendment: Explains the split of powers between the federal Government and the State Government
**Bills of Rights: first 10 Amendments of the Constitution
