anaphylaxis an extreme allergic reaction that can lead to respiratory distress, circulatory collapse, or death
antagonist a substance that interferes with or opposes the action of a drug
brand name the trade or proprietary name of a drug with a registered trademark
contraindication a factor that makes the use of a drug undesirable or dangerous
drug a substance that alters bodily function
efficacy the power to produce a specific result; aka effectiveness
generic name the nonproprietary name of a drug, usually a simplified version of its chemical name
phytomedicine herbal medicine
potentiation increased potency as a result of 2 drugs acting together
perscription (Rx) a written and signed order for a drug with directions for its administration
side effect a result of a drug or therapy that is unrelated to or an extension of its intended effect, usually referring to an undesirable effect
substance dependence a condition that may result from chronic use of a drug that creates a chronic or compulsive need for the user regardless of any negative effects; can be physical or psychological
synergy the combined action of 2 or more drugs working together to produce an effect greater than any of those drugs could produce alone
tolerance the loss of effectiveness of a drug resulting from chronic use, requiring a higher dose to achieve the original response
withdrawal a condition following the cessation or reduction of a drug after regular use
