During the Heian Period, what clan took over Kyoto? What did this clan do? The Minamoto clan took control of the capital (Kyoto) and developed many cultural practices unique to Japan.
What unique practices were brought to Japan with the Heian Period? The Heian Period saw a flourishing of culture including the first novel (The Tale of Genji) which was written by a woman. In fact, many of the texts that historians use to understand the Heian Period were written by aristocratic women.
What was the name of the clan that took over the Minamoto clan? What culture did the establish? The Ashikaga clan took over from the Minamoto and established a warrior culture in Japan that would continue for many centuries.
When was the Sengoku Jida ( The Warring States Period), and what was happening during that period? It took place in the 1500s which saw various clans fighting for military domination. Many clan leaders hoped to take control of the country and become Shogun, the head general, and start a bakufu, a military government.
Who closed Japan to other cultures? What did it lead to? The bakufu closed Japan to other cultures, leading to cmplete isolation of Japan. There was only one port on the south that remainded open, and it brought some of the western coulture in.
What brought to the Meiji Restoration Period? American ships entered Yokohama harbour in the mid 19th century demanding that Japan open its borders to trade. Upon noticing the great difference in technology from Western powers, a great shift in attitude occurred. Japan decided to catch up.
What happened by the early 20th centery? Japan was an economic and military powerhouse taking over many Pacific island nations and Eastern China. These events eventually led to WWII and culminated with two atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Since the WWII, Japan entered a period of relative peace and prosperity. What happens during that period? Japan’s economy exploded in the post-war years. The “bubble” burst in 1992 and Japan entered an economic recession. Japan is now struggling to overcome issues of low birth rate and a nagging reluctance to accept foreign workers.
In ancient times, what kind of ritual was sumo? Sumo was one of the rituals to pray for a good harvest.
What did Edo period ead to in sumo? The りきし were orgenized into groups and were training professionally .
What is the name of the rink for sumo? どひょう
What are the rules of sumo? To win, you have to forse your opponent out of the rink or make him touch the ground with anything than the bottom of his feet.
How are the りきし devided? りきし are devided by the ability into 10 ranks. the top 5 of them are called  まくのうち (top division).
How long do the tournaments last for? 15 days.
