Term | Definition |
---|---|
air mass | a body of air that has about the same temperature and moisture throughout |
atmosphere | A mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or moon. |
climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
Conduction | Form of heat transfer where heat energy is directly transferred between molecules through molecular collisions or direct contact. |
Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
Corioils effect | the reason why prevailing winds and currents curve |
Easterlies (Trade Winds) | Global winds that flow from the east to the west. |
El Nino | A warm ocean current that flows along the coast of Peru every seven to fourteen years |
global winds | winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances |
Gulf Stream | A warm ocean current that flows from the Gulf of Mexico northward through the Atlantic Ocean |
high pressure system | generally brings clear skies and calm air or gentle breezes |
humidity | The amount of water vapor in the air |
hurricane | A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure storm center |
Jet Stream | bands of high-speed winds about 10 kilometers above Earth's surface |
La Nina | "Normal" year, easterly trade winds and ocean currents pool warm water in the western Pacific, allowing upwelling of nutrient rich water off the West coast of South America. |
low pressure system | a weather system that usually brings cloudiness and stormy weather |
ocean currents | large streams of surface seawater |
prevailing winds | Global winds that blow constantly from the same direction |
Storm System | a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow. |
weather front | A boundary between two air masses |
weather map | a map showing the state of the weather over a large area. |
weather system | A specific set of weather conditions occurring in the lowest levels of the atmosphere, reflecting the configuration of air movement |
Westerlies | Winds that blow from west to east |
