Figurative Language

personification giving human qualities to nonhuman things; for example, "The angry wind blows the boat around wildly."
idiom a group of words or phrases whose meaning is different from their literal meaning; for example, "Mark had a chip on his shoulder."
alliteration the repetition of the same initial or beginning consonant sound in a series of words; for example, "Laura likes to lemon lollipops."
onomatopoeia the use of words whose words suggest their meaning: for example, "Cars honked and buzzed by during rush hour."
