QuestionAnswer
Agender A gender identity that includes a genderless state or no personal experience of gender.
Ally An individual who supports and advocates for individuals and/ or communities other than their own.
Androgynous 1-gender identity blending male and female, masculine and feminine, or devoid of specially gendered traits. 2-Visually apperain got blend masculine and feminine traits, or be devoid of specially genderfed traits.
Asexual 1-orientation in which an individual does not experience any sexual orientation or attraction. 2- A time period in an individual's life during which they do not experience any sexual attraction, or interest in sex.
Assigned Gender The gender given at birth, most often based on the visible expression of primary sex traits.
Bigender A gender identity that includes, or alternates between two genders. Most commonly someone who identifies as being both male and female.
Bisexual A sexual orientation to both genders
Bottom Surgery Slang for lower body surgeries available to trans and gender nonconforming individuals.
Butch 1-gender identity for an individual designated family at birth, that is female identified & purposefully present as masculine. 2- gender identity for any individual that purposefully presents as distinctly masculine.
Chest Surgery Upper body surgeries available to trans men and gender nonconforming individuals designated female at birth.
Cisgender An individual whose assigned aligns with their gender identity.
Cisgenderism A form of bigotry, or marginalization against trans people bases on an assumption that cisgender people are superior to transgender people.
Cisnormative the cultural assumption that being cisgender is the norm or the appropriate way to exist.
Crossdresser individual who engages in crossdressing on a regular or ongoing basis.
Crossdressing The act of wearing clothes classically designated by the culture you are part of as being for the opposite sex.
Female-to-male An individual that was designated female at birth whose gender identity is male.
Gay 1-sexual orientation toward men used by men. 2-romantic orientation towards men used by men. 3- sexual orientation used by homosexual individuals of all genders. 4- community, cultural, or social identity denoted by specific speech patterns, mannerisms.
Gender A multi-factorial social construct that ascribes individuals as being feminine, masculine, androgynous, etc...
Gender bending 1-combining masculine, feminine, and androgynous traits, to create a gender presentation beyond female or male. Often through makeup, hair, clothes. 2- Shifting between forms of gender expression, gender performance, or gender identity.
Gender Binary The concept that there are only two genders- Male and female.
Gender Dysphoria 1-A medical disorder from the DSM. 2- Experiencing birth sex to not being in alignment with gender identity, causing emotional and psychological distress.
Gender Neutral 1-Spaces that are inclusive of all individuals. 2- Term used to refer to individuals and relationships inclusive of all individuals. such as "they" or "partner" 3- Gender identity that includes genderless state, no personal experience of gender.
Gender Neutral Pronouns Pronouns used to reference an individual, other than their name, other than he/him/his or she/her/hers.
Gender Nonconforming 1-gender identity for individuals whose gender expression or experience is beyond the gender binary, or cultural gender norms. 2- An umbrella term genders or identities beyond the gender binary.
Heterosexual A sexual or romantic orientation toward those of the opposite gender.
Hermaphorodite 1-historical term for intersex individuals. 2- An offensive term intersex individuals. 3- A reference to the god Hermaphroditus in Greek mythology.
Hormone Blockers Medication used to reduce the levels of specific hormone in the body sometimes in conjunction with hormone replacement therapy.
Intersex An individual born with the sexual anatomy, reproductive organs or chromosomes that do not adhere to the medical category of male or female.
Lesbian 1-A sexual or romantic orientation toward women, used by women. 2- Community, political, or social identity denoted by a distain or male-centered, patriarchal culture, introduced in the 1970's as a segment of second-wave feminism
Legal Gender The gender listed on government documents and databases
LGBTQQIAA An acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questions, intersex, asexual, and agender.
Male-to-female An individual that was designated male at birth, whose gender identity is female.
Misgender 1-to purposefully refer to an individual by the gender or pronouns not in accordance with their gender identity. 2- to mistake an individual's gender for one not in accordance with their gender identity. q
Physical transition The process of modifying gender presentation, and or engaging in medical transition, to be in alignment with gender identity.
Preferred Pronouns The pronoun an individual would like to have used when talking to or referring to them.
Pronouns Terminology used to reference an individual other than their name.
Queer A sexual orientation categorized by an interest or attraction to individuals, unfettered by gender identities or labels. 2-An umbrella term for individuals' operating outside of or beyond social norms. 3-Derogatory term used against LGBTQQIAA.
Social Transition The process of disclosing gender identity and/or changing gender presentation around various friends, family, allies, social groups, and or workplace to be in alignment with gender identity.
Tranny 1-Derogatory or offensive term referring to trans individuals.2-Slang used trans individuals referring to self or other trans. 3- Slang used by drag community referring to self of others in community.
Transphobia Hostility or fear aimed at/ or concerning, transgender or gender nonconforming people.
Two-spirit Umbrella term used by some Native American and Canadian First Nation Indigenous populations to denote individuals that exist beyond the heterosexual cisgender experience.
Sex Biological Construct . Genetic phenotype. Sex Chromosomes(XX,XY,XXY,etc.). Often assigned at birth, or before birth. Male, Female, Intersex.
Gender Culturally Constructed. Can differ from sex/gender assigned at birth. Highly variable. Fluid in nature. Transgender, Cisgender, Non-binary.
Identity Internal sense of gender. Based on personal experience. Doesn't necessary correlate to gender assigned at birth. Foundation of social identity.
Expression How a person represents or expresses one's gender identity to others. Portrayed through: Behavior, Clothing, Hairstyle, Voice, Body Characteristics.
Why do trans people sex providers? Gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy. Surgical intervention. Gender dysphoria and re-medical transition counseling. Med. care that has nothing to do with their gender identity.
Obstacles & Detours when providing care Family/social support system. Financial. Legal gender and name on health insurance and records. Treatment from all levels of staff. Assuming everything has to do with being trans. Facing gender archetypes & Stereotypes.
"Outing" & Fear of Violence Naming legal information out loud. Sharing sex-specific results and questions. Concerns in small towns and big cities alike. Safety, "Passing" & "Privilege".
Communicating with Patients "What name would you like me to use?" "What pronoun would you like me to use?" Check-in forms and bathroom access. Training front desk staff. Be compassionate and transparent when you need to learn more.
Compassionate & Aware Care If you slip on a name or pronoun, correct and keep going. Taking care of the body a patient has, while respecting their identity. Patient responses may be based on poor past care. Self-compassion as you and your patient learn and grow.
Human Trafficking a crime against humanity, modern-day slavery. People are bought, sold, and smuggled. Often beaten, starved, and forced into sex work or jobs in factories, restaurants, or agriculture.
Types of Human Trafficking Sex trafficking, labor trafficking, criminal activity, organ harvesting.
Sex trafficking Individuals may be forced into prostitutions in residential or commercial front brothels, trucks stops, hotels, or at major sporting events. Sex trafficking also includes forced online exploitation, including, pornography and stripping.
Labor trafficking Adults may be forced to work to pay debts that can never be paid off because of poor wages and excessive interest rates.May include domestic work, begging or peddling, construction, factory or fishing industry labor, car washes, restaurants, nail salons
Criminal Activity Adults and children may be forced into street crime, begging, benefit fraud, or cultivating cannabis or other drug activity. Young adults and some children may be forced into marriages.
Organ Harvesting The demand for organs is growing faster than the supply, which opened the door to illegal trade and trafficking. Organized crime groups and individual organ brokers have expanded to a worldwide market. Migrants are particularly vulnerable.
Where do these people hide? Everywhere: Schools, stores, hospitals, gas stations, hotels.
RNs Role? National Human Trafficking Resource Center has a checklist for healthcare professionals to help identify victims. Included are general red flag indicators and specific ones for labor or sex trafficking victims.
Indicators of Human trafficking disconnected from family, friend, stopped attending school,sudden or dramatic change in behavior,engaging in commercial sex acts, denied food, water, sleep, medical care, unsuitable living condition, does the person appear to be coached on what to say
Blue Campaign National Public awareness campaign designed to educate the public, law enforcement, and other industry partners to recognize the indicators of human trafficking, and how to appropriately respond to possible cases.
Center for Countering Human Trafficking (CCHT) Advance counter human trafficking law enforcement operations, protect victims, and enhance prevention efforts by aligning DHS capabilities and expertise. Comprised of 16 supporting offices and components and is led by ICE, HSI.
