Filler Metal and gas

QuestionAnswer
Copper coating is added to the filler metal why? To improve the wire's electrical conductivity and it helps reduce corrosion
Advantages of Semi-automatic welding Skill requirements are generally lower than for SMAW. low amount of spatter with little post weld cleaning. Easier on light gauge material. High deposition rates (no slag removal, no stub end loss, high current density, continuous welding).
Disadvantages of semi-automatic welding Greater maintenance is required to keep the equipment in good working condition. Not practical outdoors. Potential of cold starts (lack of fusion).
Flow rates vary because Joint design, diameter of wire, size/shape of gas diffuser or nozzle, size of weld pool, air currents, excessive shielding gas pressure, nozzle to work distance
Semi-automatic flow rates 7-23L/min
Gases mixed with oxygen should not be used on ferrous metals
Helix The result of a natural twisting action of the wire during forming. If the twist is too much, the wire does not go straight out of the contact tip.
The smaller the wire diameter the____________________ higher the melting rate
As the base metal increases __________________ the wire size should increase as well
GMAW wire is classified according to its' chemical composition
AWS American Welding Standard measures Tensile strength in Imperial
CSA Canadian Standards Association measures Tensile strength in Metric
Reactive Gas CO₂ and oxygen react with elements in the base metal. Can have an effect on toughness and tensile strength. Help stabilize the arc and minimize undercut.
Inert Gas Argon and helium are not reactive. They do not combine chemically with the products in the weld zone.
Argon-Helium Mix works on all metals
Electrode wires for semi-automatic welding are available in diameters of 0.5 mm to 3.2 mm (0.020” to 1/8”)
Atmosphere mixes with the metals to make Oxides and Nitrides
