Term | Definition |
---|---|
ash | is a mixture of rock, mineral, and glass particles expelled from a volcano during a volcanic eruption. |
cinder cone | are the simplest type of volcano. They are built from particles and blobs of lava ejected from a single vent and have a cone-like shape. |
cinders | small pieces of partly burned coal or wood that has stopped giving off flames but still can burn. |
composite volcano | also known as a stratovolcano, it is a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava, ash and pumice |
crater | is a bowl-shaped depression, or hollowed-out area, produced by volcanic activity, or a volcanic explosion. |
eruption | the release of molten rock, hot rock fragments, and hot gases through/from a volcano |
lava | is magma (molten rock) emerging as a liquid onto Earth's surface. |
shield volcano | is a type of volcano named for its low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It is formed by the eruption of highly fluid lava, which travels farther and forms thinner flows |
stratovolcano | also known as a composite volcano, is a conical volcano built up by many layers of hardened lava |
vent | are openings in the Earth's crust from which magma and volcanic gases escape onto the ground or into the atmosphere. |
