Tectonic Plates Engl
English
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Tectonic Plates | The Earth's crust is broken up into pieces or plates that move while floating on denser mantle |
Crust | The rigid outer part of the Earth's layers |
Continental Crust | Thicker, older, less dense, made of granite |
Oceanic Crust | Thinner, younger, denser, made of basalt |
Plate Boundary | The place where two tectonic plates meet |
Convergent Boundary | Two tectonic plates move together |
Divergent Boundary | Two tectonic plates move apart |
Transform Boundary | Two tectonic plates move past each other |
Subduction Zone | When two plates converge and the denser one goes under the less dense one (typically oceanic below continental), can form volcanoes |
Mountain Range | When two plates converge and fold pushing their crust up to form a mountain (usually continental-continental interaction) |
Earthquake | A sudden and violent shaking of the ground as a result of movements of the Earth's crust |
Island Arcs | Series of islands formed as a result of denser and older oceanic crust sinking under less dense younger oceanic crust |
Hot Spots | A point in the Earth's crust that has a hot upwelling of magma that forms a chain of islands as the tectonic plate moves over the hot spot |
Faults | A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rocks, which all the rocks to move relative to one another |
Mid-ocean ridge | A ridge system located where two plates are diverging and magma upwells to create new oceanic crust |
Sea floor spreading | The outward movement of the seafloor as new crust is formed at a mid-ocean ridge pushing the older seafloor away |
Theory of Continental Drift | Originated by Alfred Wegner- the theory that Earth's continents have moved over geologic time relative to each other |
Plate Tectonics Theory | Theory of motions at the Earth's surface and creation of major landforms as a result of the movement of tectonic plates |
