Waves and Lights
Unit: 3
Term | Definition |
---|---|
wave | A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. |
meduim | Is the material through which a wave travels. |
longitudinal wave | particels move back and forth in the same direction that the wave travels, or parallel to the wave. the coils move back and forth as the wave passes along the spring toy. |
transverse wave | particels move perpendiculary to the direction the wave travels. the srping coils move up and down as the wave passes. |
mechanic wave | a wave that requires a medium through which to travel. can travel through more than one medium. |
electromagnetic wave | a disterbance in electric and magnetic fields. they are transverse waves. |
amplitude | a measure of how far the particels of the medium move away from there normal rest postition. |
wavelength | the distance from any point on a wave toan identical point on the next wave. |
wave period | the time requierd for one cycle. |
frequency | how many cycles occur is an amount of time usally 1s. |
hertz | one hertz is equal to one cycle per secound |
wave speed | the speed at whitch a wave travels. depends on properties of the medium |
