Where was the first successful colony established in America? Jamestown
What is the difference between indentured servants and slaves? Indentured Servants worked until their contract was done and then were free; Slaves worked and were never free.
What are the differences between Pilgrims and Puritans? Pilgrims wanted religious freedom and Puritans wanted to establish the Church of England in the colonies with a charter from the King.
What were some of the problems that Jamestown colonists faced upon settlement? hunger and disease
What were some of the reasons the colonists came to the southern colonies? fertile flat land and rich families wanted to become richer farming there.
What role did slavery play in the Southern plantation economy? Slavery increased profits and allowed owners to grow cash crops like cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane.
How did John Smith improve Jamestown? He established the law/rule of "no work, no eat". He strengthened Jamestown’s defenses.
Why were slaves in high demand in the South? They allowed the owners to make more profits and gain more land.
What are two things the Southern economy is based upon? slavery and farming
Why did colonists fear slaves in the South? They might revolt and take over like what happened in Haiti.
What were the driving forces behind people leaving Europe for America? Religious freedom from persecution and financial opportunity.
