Eclipse

Describe the different types of eclipes

TermDefinition
Eclipse the total or partial obscuring of one celestial body by another
Solar Eclipse an eclipse of the sun by the moon
Partial Lunar Eclipse an eclipse in which the moon is not completely immersed in the umbra of the earth's shadow
Partial Solar Eclipse an eclipse of the sun in which the moon does not completely hide the solar surface or photosphere so that some direct rays of sunlight reach the observer
Total Solar Eclipse an eclipse of the sun in which the moon completely hides the solar surface or photosphere and thereby cuts off all direct rays of sunlight from the observer
Penumbra a space of partial illumination (as in an eclipse) between the perfect shadow on all sides and the full light
Umbra the conical part of the shadow of a celestial body excluding all light from the primary source
Annular Eclipse an eclipse in which a thin outer ring of the sun's disk is not covered by the smaller dark disk of the moon
