hydrosphere | portion of earth that consists of water |
biosphere | the parts of earth that contain living organisms |
constructive force | any natural process that builds up the earths surface |
destructive force | a natural force that breaks down the earth |
seismic wave | vibrations coming from an earthquake |
pressure | a force pressing on the surface |
crust | the outer layer of the earth made of rock |
basalt | a dark, dense, lgneous rock with a smooth texture |
granite | a light colored rock that is in the crust |
mantle | the layer of hot rock under the crust |
lithosphere | a rigid layer made up of the mantle and crust |
asthenosphere | a soft layer of the mantle |
outer core | a layer of molten iron and nickle that surrounds the inner core |
inner core | the sphere of solid iron that is inside the earth |
radiation | transfer of energy |
convection | transfer of thermal energy through a fluid |
conduction | transfer of thermal energy between particles |
density | The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume |
convective current | The movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from one part of the fluid to another. |
