QuestionAnswer
ionic compound formulae unit, contains ions and has a nuteral total charge, transfer of electrons by metal + nonmetal
covalent compound molecular unit, nonmetal + nonmetal that share electrons
molecular formula actual number of atoms of each type in a molecule
empirical formula gives ratio of the atoms in the molecule
structural formula gives the most information, gives actual arrangement of atoms and the types of bond in a molecule
polyatomic compounds contaies a group of covalently bonded atoms with an overall charge
naming binary ionic compounds. name of cation metal & base name of nonmetal anion +ide
to balance ionic compound use valence electrons and charges to find the balance to make a nuteral compound.
naming type 2 binary compound these are for transfer metals. distinguish how much cations to create a nutreal compound. name cation+ roman numeral to show amount of charge & base name anion + -ide
PT family/group has... same number of valance electron and similar characters
the first member of each group on the PT... shows abnormal properties and will be the smallest size
physical properties of ionic compounds very high melting and boling point, dissolves in water and spereates anions and cations, conducts electricity in a solution
with ionic compounds change the charges without the sign when writing down the formula
physical properties of covalent/molecular compounds mostly gases, dissloves in polar and non-polar solvents, does not conduct electricity
naming bianary molecular compounds prefix first element(smallest group #, if in same group, greatest row # 1st) & prefix last element
binary acid made of hydrogen and one other non-metal, aqueous hydro prefix & nonmetal +ic & acid
oxyacids compounds that contain hydrogen, oxygen and at least one other element. hydrogenis ommited when naming
polyatomic ion ending with -ate oxyacid ends with -ic acid
polyatomic acid ends with -ite oxyacd ends with -ous acid

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
