unit 5 chemistry
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Coefficient | a number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula that shows how many atoms or molecules of the substance are involved in the reaction |
Synthesis reactions | a chemical process in which two or more simple elements or compounds combine to form a more complex product. It is represented by the equation: A + B → AB |
Decomposition reactions | a chemical reaction in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products. usually represented as AB -> A + B |
Precipitation reaction | cations and anions in aqueous solution combine to form an insoluble ionic solid called a precipitate. |
Single replacement reactions | A single replacement reaction, sometimes called a single displacement reaction, is a reaction in which one element is substituted for another element in a compound. AB + C -> A +CB |
Aqueous | a solution in which the solvent is water |
Reactants | substances initially present in a chemical reaction that are consumed during the reaction (i.e.: recipe/ingredients) |
Combustion reactions | a chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen and usually accompanied by the generation of heat and light in the form of flame. |
Double replacement reactions | The double-replacement reaction generally takes the form of AB + CD → AD + CB where A and C are positively-charged cations, while B and D are negatively-charged anions. |
Law of conservation of matter | the total mass of the products remains equal to the total mass of the reactants |
Balanced Chemical Equation | an equation for a chemical reaction in which the number of atoms for each element in the reaction and the total charge is the same for both the reactants and the products. In other words, the mass and the charge are balanced on both sides of the reaction. |
Oxidation-reduction reaction | any chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by gaining or losing an electron |
Products | a new material formed in a chemical reaction |
