US Imperialism & Expansion

TermDefinition
Transcontinental Railroad A railroad system that crossed the continental United States.
Buffalo Soldiers African American soldiers who served in the cavalry during the war for the west.
Reservations Federal lands set aside for Native Americans.
Imperialism The practice of extending a nation's power by gaining territories for a colonial empire.
Isolationism A national policy of avoiding involvement in other countries problems and conflicts.
Yellow Journalism The reporting of exaggerated stories in newspapers as means to increase sales.
Monroe Doctrine A policy created in 1823 forbidding further colonization in the Americas and declaring that any attempt to do so would be considered an act of war.
Roosevelt Corollary An additional policy that warned nations in the Americas that if they didn't pay their debts, the US would intervene.
Sphere of Influence An area where foreign nations control trade or natural resources of another nation or area.
Open Door Policy A policy established by the US in 1899 to promote equal access for all nations to trade in China.
