How to Test for Hydrogen Gas? A lighted splint is held to the mouth of a tube.
What is the reaction that takes place with Hydrogen 2H2(g) + O2(g) ----->2H20(l)
What is the result if hydrogen is present? Hydrogen explodes with a sqeaqy pop.
How to test for Oxygen? A glowing splint is put into the test tube containing the gas.
What is the result if oxygen is present? Oxygen relights the Glowing splint.
How to test for Carbon dioxide? The carbon dioxide is bubbled through limewater
What is the result if CO2 is present? Carbon dioxide turns Limewater milky colour.
What is Limewater(Give Chemical formulae also) Limewater is Calcium Hydroxide solution..(Ca(OH)2)
What is the equation when carbon dioxide is bubbled through Limewater? Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2(g)---->CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)
How to test for Chlorine Gas? A peice of damp blue litmus paper is placed into the testube or held over its mouth.
What is the colour of Chlorine? Green
Is chlorine Poisonous? Yes
What is the result if Chlorine is present? Chlorine makes the blue litmus paper go red then finally white(Chlorine bleeches the blue litmus paper.)
Is chlorine Acidic or Alkaline? Acidic
How to test for ammonia? A peice of damp red litmus paper is placed into the test tube or held over it's mouth.
What is the result if ammonia is present? Ammonia turns the damp red litmus paper blue.
How to carry out a flame test? - A platinum or nichrome wire is dipped into concentrated Hydrochloride solution. - Then it is placed into the salt that is to be tested so that some salt stickes on the end. - The wire and the salt are then held over a NON-Luminous bunsen burner flame.
What is the colour of the flame if Potassium is tested. Lilac
What is the colour of the flame if Lithium is tested. Red
What is the colour of the flame if Sodium is tested. Yellow
What is the colour of the flame if Calcium is tested. Orange brown or Brick red.
What are the safety precausions in testing for chlorine - Wear safety googles - Wear heatproof gloves - Don't Sniff or inhale the fumes
