Salinity The proportion of dissolved salts in water
Ocean salinity 35 grams of dissolved salts in every kilogram of water
What changes as depth increases? Light and temperature decrease as pressure increases
Continental shelf The gently sloping plain that forms an apron of water around most of the continents
Surface Current A large stream of ocean water that moves continuously in the same direction
What causes surface currents? Winds blowing across the surface of the ocean cause the continuous flow of surface currents
What are deep ocean currents caused by? Deep ocean currents are caused by differences in the density of ocean water
Density currents These are responsible for the slow mixing of water between the surface water and the deeper ocean.
What is upwelling? Upwelling is when the warm water on the surface is pushed aside by the wind and then replaced by the cold water from underneath
Hydraulic action does what? Hydraulic changes the landscape by water pounding on cracks in the rocks
Longshore Drift Longshore Drift is the process that moves sand along and down the shore in a zigzag motion
