Scientific method, matter, energy

TermDefinition
Data Table A table with rows and columns that helps organize data from an experiment.
Chart A type of graph that shows data in a picture form to help with understanding.
Hypothesis An educated guess or prediction of what you think is going to happen during an experiment.
Independent Variable The variable you manipulate or change during the experiment.
Constants The variables you try to keep the same during an experiment.
Dependent Variable The variable you measure during an experiment.
Atom The basic building block of matter and the smallest form of an element.
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass.
Solid Matter that has a fixed volume and a fixed shape.
Liquid Matter that has a fixed volume and a changing shape.
Gas Matter that changes both volume and shape.
Molecule Two or more atoms joined together.
Compounds Two or more atoms that contain two different types of elements.
Kinetic Energy Energy in motion
Potential Energy Energy at rest
Evaporation When a liquid turns into a gas.
Condensation When a gas turns into a liquid.
Physical Change A change in size, shape, or state of matter, but no change in composition.
Chemical Change A change that forms a new substance.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Heat A type of energy that helps matter change phase.
